about

This is a Jiayi Han ethnic folk song from the period when Japan occupied Taiwan. It was a traditional folk song sung by the political prisoners from inside the prison walls in a high calling voice like a bird so their families would know they were okay. On the first chorus, Jeremy is playing coconut fiddle. He learned the song from a folk musician in Taiwan who spoke only Japanese and local dialect.

lyrics

Oh, oh, the bird is crying. It’s all alone
and it can’t get back to its nest.
It’s crying out in the middle of the night
but no one helps.
Its wing is broken and it can’t fly home.
